The Importance of the Creative Mind.

Wed Oct 17, 2007, 3:26 PM
From the dawn of recorded history art has always been an integral part of what it means to be human, and has kept pace with man's technological advancements, often spearheading the impetus towards the concretion of our dreams. Art is a product of man's ability to conceptualize, to think of possibilities beyond the known facts, to transcend limitations by way of the imagination. The imaginative mind has proven by far to be our most important asset, coupled with an undying curiosity to investigate the nature of things - the whys and the hows.

Creative expression in today's world has become even more prolific than in the days of antiquity. The creative imagination is pushing technology to its limits, and forcing it to go beyond the known boundaries of science. With the advent of computer technology and its continued development, we are seeing the unrestrained freedom of the creative process feeding on itself to give birth to even more heretofore inconceivable creations.

At the forefront of it all has always stood the artist (the dreamer), the one who sees what can be, the one who leaps forward intellectually with unbounded enthusiasm and returns to tell us of the wonders he has seen, igniting within men the passion to reach forward and make that dream a reality. The artist is the conceptual concretizer, showing in a visual or literary context his vision of what man and the world ideally can, and should be. A world without art or artist would be a world without motive power, a world where time would stand still for want of creative input. Imagination is so much a part of man that to deny it is to deny his own basic nature.

WORLDS BEYOND THE HORIZON

Hi, my name is Andrew Cox. I guess you had already came to the conclusion that I am an artist- and you are right. I have been drawing and painting from the moment I knew such things were possible, and that my imagination didn't have to remain just fleeting moments of inspiration and wonder, forgotten or forever unrealized, left to collect dust in the vast universe of neuronal connections that gave birth to my mind. I still remember my very first drawing and why I did it. I was possibly about six years old walking home and on the lawn next to the sidewalk I spotted a piece of paper with something on it. Out of curiosity I picked it up. What was on that piece of paper was a drawing of a humanoid creature I called Rock Man. Later I came to know this creature as The Thing from The Fantastic Four. Finding that coloured penciled drawing was the spark that set the fires of my imagination raging and seeking ever more wonders to consume.

My very first drawing was of my teddy bear on which I placed a police man's cap. The reason for the cap was that during that day I had seen a police man, and was very taken with the visor on his cap. It was very important for me to get the look of the visor correct, and that I did accomplish, and was the first sense of personal accomplishment I had ever experienced. It was not about show, it was strictly about me and my private universe.

Art for me has always been, in part, about the state of mind I am in when creating, better known as Flow - and second the work which is being created which for me is a vehicle that transcends the boundaries of consensus reality and takes me to places and worlds I have never been to nor seen before. I guess for me my motto would be 'To explore the farther reaches and dimensions of my imagination, and to have something tangible at the end of my journey.'

I am self taught although I did spend some time in college and university. I believe that in many ways to reach any degree of excellence you must have ambition, tenacity, curiosity, and an appetite for knowledge, including a desire to master and apply the specific skills necessary in achieving your objective.

I have been producing and selling my work from the time I was in my mid teens.

Thanks a lot for all the favourites :thanks: interesting ID too - it's rare to see people who remember how they started that long ago - I think my first drawings were of flowers, probably provoked by the talking ones in Alice in Wonderland or ones in a game I loved :XD: like you - it was part of media or popular culture that got me interested too. Funny how something like that can change a person's entire life's path :omg:
